I love Shito and going to have a little fun with this one! Shito is a type of sauce / condiment eaten with many foods in Ghana such as Jollof (Rice cooked in an tomato sauce), Yam (Dioscorea rotundata) or Kenkey (fermented white corn) and more. I searched supermarkets and Afro-Caribbean stores to find the best Shito you can buy.
14. Ghana Best Shito Mild
Do not like the flavour at all, tastes artificial. I do not taste the fish or shrimp, I can only taste a chemical type flavour. Texture is thick , grainy and more solid than your usual Shito. Did not get any heat but it is, as it states, the mild version. Unfortunately this is going straight in the bin as it is bad enough to put someone new to Shito off for life.

13. Ghana Best Shito Hot
Was not looking forward to tasting this one as its variant was disgusting. It is the same, tastes artificial. Texture is thick, grainy and more solid than your usual Shito. Did get more heat than its mild version.

Slightly sweet Shito with not much flavour. Consistency is slightly rough and small pieces of fish and shrimp. For a hot Shito it is milder than most Shito at mild level.

Had my doubts after tasting the hot version but this is actually better. Not as sweet surprisingly. Everything is subtle which makes for a better experience apart from the after taste of slight bitterness. Same texture consistency as it’s hot sister counterpart.

10. Lee Kum Kee Chiu Chow Chilli Oil
Technically not Shito but this product more widely available in the UK than Shito is. You have to eat the chilli below the oil to get the slight similar Shito experience. The taste is much saltier than Shito with a taste of garlic. Consistency is rough of many chilli seeds. Spice is below mild compared to normal Shito spice heat.

9. Mariam Foods Shito
This Shito tastes quite sweet, with a more of a chewy consistency because of the small but noticeable pieces of fish and shrimp. Sweetest tasting Shito in this whole review if you want a Shito like this. Heat spice is very subtle.

Mildly pleasant, you get a mild but noticeable taste of the saltiness mixed in with multiple different flavours coming through. Texture is nice with small but noticeable pieces of shrimp. Spice is very mild but not as mild as Africa’s finest hot.

Not a lot of flavour until you get a chunk of fish in your mouth, can’t taste much of anything otherwise but maybe because of the heat because it is hot. Not too hot though. The consistency is ok. Slightly rougher with small but rare pieces of fish and shrimp.

6. Exotic Foods No.1 Chilli Sauce
Not technically Shito but banging, just works, not much to it. You can taste the chilli, garlic and onion with a slight smoky flavour. The texture is similar to the Lee Kum Kee Chiu chow Chilli oil with a rough texture of many chilli seeds. The spice level is low but this could definitely be enjoyed with a variety of dishes.

2. Aftrad Village Kitchen Shito Fish and Shrimp Hot
Similar to its mild sister variant you can taste the strong fish and shrimp taste coming through, texture is of what you would usually find homemade or at a Ghanaian party. The fish and shrimp have been blended fully only with the occasional feel of these. The Spice is hotter than the mild version as stated but I would still like it hotter. A hotter variant is available but was not in stock sadly at the time of review but can be purchased here

1.Aftrad Village kitchen Shito Coconut and Mushroom Hot
I did not know what to expect from this but you know what, this is absolutely delicious. Can taste the mushroom and only very slightly the coconut. There are small chunks of mushroom with an otherwise smooth consistency. The spice for me is mild, with only slight heat so that is my only negative. If was served to you as normal Shito you would be very pleased. This is all great considering it is vegan too.

Best Shito is Aftrad Village Kitchen Coconut AND Mushroom, has the consistency of Shito you would get homemade or at an Ghanaian party. Has the taste and texture of an authentic Shito. I would hope this version would enter your local superstores rather than “Ghana Best Shito”. Maybe the process to mass produce Shito for supermarkets brings the quality down very low and maybe is the reason why “Ghana Best Shito” is a bad representation of Shito.
