We searched every supermarket we could find for the best millionaire slice. I love these delicious chocolatey caramel heavenly layered biscuits, so I wanted to find the best. The criteria was strict as there are many products out there so the product had to have “naire” in the name with a combination of either slice or shortbread and then finally not have the name “Bites” or “Free From”. The order we tested the products was random and are listed as such:
Waitrose Millionaire’s Shortbread
Strong taste of tasty chocolate comes through with a not overly sweet caramel. The shortbread is too crumbly for me.
Purchased for: £2.75
Overall rating: 5/10
Morrisons Millionaire Shortbread
The taste of the chocolate does not come through, only can taste the caramel. The shortbread base is way too crumbly.
Purchased for: £1.25
Overall rating: 3 / 10
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference 4 Millionaire’s Shortbread
Very thin layer of caramel with a thick creamy chocolate topping. Can taste the chocolate particularly as there is a lot of it with a shortbread base that is not overall crumbly and is overall “ok”.
Purchased for: £3.00
Overall rating: 6/10
M & S Completely Loaded Millionaire’s Shortbread
M&S do not lie with this product name, this millionaire shortbread is complexly loaded with chocolate and caramel. The chocolate and caramel is creamy, loaded with chocolate covered shortbread balls, absolute definition of completely LOADED. The shortbread is thin and not crumbly. As Mr burns would say “Excellent…..” , the only negative I would have it is maybe too overloaded but that looks like the selling point so can’t argue much against it.
Purchased for: £2.65
Overall rating: 8/10
Sainsbury’s on the go Millionaire Shortbread
Very chewy caramel which adds a lovely texture to the millionaire shortbread. Cannot however taste the chocolate and the base has a good not crumbly texture.
Purchased for: £1.00
Overall rating: 5.5/10
Aldi Hand Finished Trillionaire Slices
Creamy , not too sweet, nice textured solid shortbread that does not crumble , taste of smooth caramel and the finishing touch of the explosion of the crispy balls in your mouth is so beautiful and tasty.
Purchased for: £1.59
Overall rating: 9 / 10
Tesco Finest 4 Millionaire Shortbread Slices
The shortbread base is thicker and therefor more prominent in the taste than the other on this list. The caramel has a strong taste to it that would be for me closer to the taste of very subtle coffee. Could not taste the chocolate. The shortbread base is not crumbly. This to me is like shortbread with caramel with a hint of chocolate.
Purchased for: £2.25
Overall rating: 5/10
Amazon Millionaire shortbread
Shortbread base very buttery, the caramel is chewy and not too sweet with the subtle but noticeable chocolate. In all ok but base way too crumbly. As it is the cheapest product in this contest it gets an extra point.
Purchased for: 73p
Overall rating: 6/10
Waitrose Sea Salted Caramel Millionaire
Hardest shortbread base so far, not at all crumbly. With a thin layer of sea salted caramel (definitely can taste the salt) then a layer of chocolate I cannot taste. The salt a little bit too noticeable for me but it looks beautiful. If you put this in the fridge it turns to be like a salted shortbread caramel chocolate bar which actually is better for me than room temperature as each bite is tougher to chew so less flavour is released in each bite so the salt taste in this situation is much better.
Purchased for: £3.50
Overall rating: 7/10
McVitie’s 5 Caramel Millionaire Slices
Tastes too artificial after tasting all these other millionaire shortbreads. Texture is of an oat cake biscuit and barely taste anything else. Can’t compete with the others, shouldn’t have made the cut.
Purchased for: 80p (Asda, available in multiple stores)
Overall rating: 0/10
